What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, drug-free therapy that uses real-time monitoring of brain activity to help the brain learn to self-regulate. Think of it as a workout for your brain — except instead of weights, you're using information about your own brain waves to train healthier patterns.
During a session, small sensors are placed on specific areas of the scalp. These sensors read your brain's electrical activity and display it on a computer screen. As you watch a movie or visual display, the feedback responds to your brain — rewarding healthier patterns with clearer audio and video. Over time, your brain learns to produce these healthier patterns on its own.
The Othmer Method
Sally is trained in the Othmer method of neurofeedback, also known as Infra-Low Frequency (ILF) neurofeedback. This approach works with the brain's deepest regulatory networks — the systems that control arousal, mood, sleep, and the stress response. It's particularly effective for complex conditions like developmental trauma, which often doesn't respond fully to other treatments.
Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, renowned trauma expert and author of The Body Keeps the Score, identifies this approach as a recommended treatment for developmental trauma.
