A Gentle, Non-Invasive Approach for Individuals with ASD
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact, and experience the world. While ASD presents differently in every person, many individuals on the spectrum experience challenges with sensory processing, emotional regulation, anxiety, sleep, and social engagement.
Neurofeedback offers a gentle, non-invasive complement to existing therapies and supports. Rather than targeting behavior directly, neurofeedback works with the brain's own electrical activity — helping to calm an overactive nervous system, improve self-regulation, and support overall neurological functioning.
How Neurofeedback Can Help Individuals with ASD
Research into neurofeedback for ASD is ongoing and promising. Many families report meaningful improvements in the following areas after a course of neurofeedback sessions:
What Families and Individuals Often Report
- Reduced anxiety and emotional reactivity
- Improved ability to self-regulate during stressful situations
- Better sleep quality and sleep onset
- Decreased sensory sensitivities
- Improved attention and focus
- Greater ease in social interactions
- Reduced repetitive or compulsive behaviors
- Improved mood and overall well-being
Sally's Approach to ASD
Sally Gordon, LCSW, brings over 30 years of experience working with children and families navigating complex neurodevelopmental and attachment challenges. Many of the children she works with have overlapping diagnoses — including ADHD, anxiety, developmental trauma, and ASD — and she is skilled at tailoring neurofeedback protocols to each individual's unique neurological profile and needs.
Sally takes a calm, patient-centered approach that is sensitive to the sensory and communication needs of individuals on the spectrum. Sessions are conducted in a quiet, low-stimulation environment, and protocols are adjusted gradually to ensure comfort throughout the process.
What to Expect
Neurofeedback for ASD follows the same comfortable process as other neurofeedback treatments. Small sensors are placed on the scalp (no electricity is applied), and your brain receives real-time feedback through a visual display or movie. There is nothing to do but relax and watch.
Session Details
- Sessions: 50 minutes each, typically 1x per week
- Course of treatment: Most clients begin to notice changes within the first several sessions, and reach their goals typically within 20–30 sessions
- The experience: Comfortable and relaxing — simply watch a screen while sensors monitor brain activity
- Side effects: Non-invasive with no lasting side effects
Is Neurofeedback Right for Your Family?
Neurofeedback may be a good fit if your child or family member with ASD experiences significant anxiety, sleep difficulties, emotional dysregulation, or sensory challenges that are affecting daily life. It can be used alongside other therapies such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA, or counseling.
Sally offers a free phone consultation to discuss your situation and help you determine whether neurofeedback is an appropriate fit. Every individual is different, and Sally will take the time to understand your specific concerns before making any recommendations.
